Bonaire Land Sailing

Bonaire Land SailingBonaire is a tropical paradise located north of Venezuela. Bonaire is a country that takes environmental conservation seriously. As much of the economy relies on tourism, Bonaire leads the world in protecting its most valuable natural resource, the environment. While most people associate Bonaire with diving and other marine activities, there’s plenty to do for the land-lovers as well. In fact, Bonaire has become a world-class destination for a lesser-known sport, land sailing.

What is land sailing?
Landing sailing is a sport practiced all over the world where participants travel across land in a wheeled vehicle as wind catches the sail, similar to sailing on the water. Typically, land sailing is a sport done on wide-open, flat terrain but is sometimes done on wide paths. The sport has been around for many years (since the 1950’s) but has roots going back to ancient Egypt and the invention of land yachts.

Today, the main goal of competitive land sailing is to gain as much speed as possible in races with other opponents. Modern-day land sailors have reached speeds as high as 70 MPH using fairly high-tech equipment. For recreational sailors, of course, the sport is fairly safe and speeds are significantly lower.

Bonaire land sailing has recently become a sought after activity amongst tourists and locals alike. The consistency of tropical winds across this Caribbean island combined with the longest land sailing course in the world makes Bonaire a destination for this fast-growing sport. Most of the land sailing in Bonaire takes place on the northeast side of the island. Accessible to tourists arriving on cruise boats and to those staying a while, land sailing has become a popular activity for visitors interested in adding an adrenalin rush to their vacation.

In Bonaire, there are several companies offering land sailing adventures, lessons and tours. A couple hours of lessons and sailing tours will run you about 50 dollars. If you’re in need of a little excitement on your next trip to Bonaire, give land sailing a try.
