Blog-Sittin' on the Beach-The Basics of Jamaica
Understanding the basics of Jamaica will get your far on your vacation. Maintaining a mindful attitude toward the country's people and culture will get you even further.
Despite the conceived gentrification of Jamaica, the country is still relatively impoverished based on the standards of many first-world nations. Although it may appear that many locals live in destitution, the fact remains that it is a part of their life and they take pride in what they must do to sustain a lifestyle. Mocking or placating them in any fashion will be easily detected and not well-received. Appreciate them and they will show you a level of hospitality unlike any other.
A great portion of Jamaica's economy and livelihood stems from the selling of foods, services, and wares to tourists. Fruits, vegetables, clothing, hair braiding, artwork, marijuana, jewelry, transportation, even directions, are all for sale and many. In most situations, you'll not be in a position to purchase anything. You'll be approached often, but a simple, "no," will suffice. While most vendors are persistent, most will give up following a few refusals; they are trying to provide for their families and their time is as valuable as yours.
In Ocho Rios, you will find some of Jamaica's more intricate crafts, and at prices that are easy to haggle for.
Montego Bay, however, is where you will discover the greatest assortment of souvenirs, electronics, valuables, duty-free cigars and alcohol, and beach accessories. Halfmoon Shopping Village is where most veteran tourists know to locate the best deals; because each vendor is jockeying for your business, item prices can be withered down to near-steals.
Negril is best known for their Jamaican art, foods, and fine jewelry; again, all ripe for bargaining. And similar to the vendors of Montego Bay, Negril vendors are eager for your business, so there will be many opportunities for finding the best wares for the best prices.
