One focal point of the Belize tourism is the islands ties to the Mayan culture. It is home to many Maya temples and palaces. The Maya occupation began as early as 1500 BC, and although its decline started around 900 AD, some Maya cultural centers continued to be occupied until contact with the Spanish in the 1500'sFrom 250 AD to 900 AD the population of Belize exceeded over one million people, and many believe that Belize was the heart of the Maya civilization at that time. There is still a significant Maya population residing within many small villages.

From Turq.com: The ruins of Altun Ha are famous for many reasons. Here they found a Jade Head - largest carved jade object in the whole Maya area - representing the Sun God, Kinich Ahau. It is a national symbol of Belize, which you can see cornered on every Belizean banknote in circulation. Altun Ha was a major ceremonial center in the Classic Period (250-900 A.D.) and functioned as vital trading center linking the Caribbean shores with other Maya centers in the interior. Altun Ha is located 31 miles north of Belize City.
